Adam Dental Supplies stocks a wide array of examination glove products, including but not limited to latex gloves and nitrile gloves. The different types of gloves we offer have different qualities, benefits, and uses for specific types of applications and environments.

Gloves by Type

Nitrile gloves are made from a substance derived from rubber. They are:

  • Latex-free
  • BPA free
  • Vinyl free
  • Phthalate-free
  • MBT free
  • Often powder-free
  • Waterproof

Nitrile gloves offer a high comfort level, are very durable, and are threefold more resistant to punctures than latex or vinyl gloves. They offer unparalleled protection against chemicals and a high level of resistance to fats, oils, detergents, cuts, abrasions, and splashes. Non-sterile nitrile gloves are used in non-sterile medical, lab, clinical, and quality control areas, as well as in cleanroom situations, cleaning industry, food handling, manufacturing, and engineering. Nitrile is particularly ideal for use by anyone who has a sensitivity or allergy to latex. Nitrile gloves are preferred in the medical and dental industries as they also provide unmatched protection for patients and staff against bacteria, viruses, bio-hazards, microorganisms, and chemicals.

Latex Examination Gloves (non-sterile, medical disposable gloves or sterile medical-grade gloves) are strong and ideal for use in the medical, food handling, and cleaning industries. They are available in powder-free options and are suitable for use by anyone without a latex allergy who works in medical, dental, clinical, lab, or quality control areas. Latex gloves are HACCP Australia endorsed as food safe and blue latex gloves are used as the standard for increased visibility and hygiene. Latex offers a very high level of strength and durability.

Vinyl gloves are non-sterile gloves that are priced economically. They are usually used in food processing, in cafes and restaurants, in delicatessens, and the cleaning industry. While they are available in white/flesh colour, blue vinyl gloves are specifically recommended for use in the processing and handling of meat products due to their increased visibility where food hygiene is most important.

Vinyl is free of latex, endorsed by HACCP Australia for safe food handling, and these gloves are lightly powdered for ease of use. They offer high levels of dexterity and are comfortable to wear.

Neoprene Gloves are highly chemical-resistant. Made of a synthetic rubber compound, neoprene gloves protect against solvents, oils, caustics, and acids and are ideal for handling wet or slippery materials. Neoprene, however, does provide less resistance to cuts, punctures, abrasions, and snags than rubber or nitrile do.

Glove Colour Coding

In certain circumstances, glove use is segmented by colour to help eliminate risks of cross-contamination. Coloured gloves are also easier in a clinical or another potentially risky environment to identify breaks or snags in the glove material and to quickly notice if a shard of glove material gets into the item being handled.

  • Black Nitrile Gloves or black latex gloves are most commonly used for trade-based applications, hairdressing, beauty therapy, and tattooing.  They are also often preferred by law enforcement and postal workers. Nitrile options are also ideal for outdoor tradespersons including mechanics as they have low sweat technology.
  • Blue gloves are widely used by everyone from doctors to food preparation workers as it is easy to see if the glove fails – for this reason, they are used widely in medical and other clinical facilities.
  • Purple gloves are used for administering and handling chemotherapy drugs, which are highly toxic. They meet the Australian Standard ASTM D6978 and they must be used wherever contact with a chemotherapeutic agent is possible.
