What are Dental Burs?
Dental burs are the tiny drill tips used for working on teeth! They attach to a dentist handpiece to cut away bone and tooth material and to polish hard surfaces. They can rotate at speeds of up to half a million revolutions per minute. There is a range of different types of burs suited to different specific uses. A professional dental clinic will have a comprehensive stock of all the types of burs they may ever require.
The shank of the bur is the longer part that connects to the handpiece. Their length and size vary depending on the type of handpiece they are used with.
Types of Dental Burs
- Diamond Burs – these are mostly used with high-speed handpieces. These burs are crafted by bonding small particles of genuine diamond onto a substrate material. As the hardest available material, diamond burs are used to grind enamel and other hard tooth tissue to leave a rough finish and are commonly used for crown and veneer work. They’re also very effective for cutting porcelain restorative material away. Available in a variety of shapes and sizes, diamond burs wear down quickly, can become clogged with tissue debris, and have a short lifespan. They are, however, a very high-quality product and allow for a smooth, fast, and very precise cut.
- Steel Burs - this economical, high-value dental bur is a good option for removing dentin, adjusting acrylics, and preparing cavities for filling. Steel burs are more flexible, softer, and more chip/break-resistant than carbide burs, but their lifespan is much shorter than that of a carbide bur. They can corrode over time.
- Tungsten Carbide Burs – this material is 300% stiffer than steel. It holds its sharpness, hence is great for cutting. Where diamond burs grind, carbide burs chip and cut the tooth and result in a smoother finish. Debris buildup is minimal, and these burs are very effective when used for trimming composites, shaping bone, and removing metal restorations and old fillings. They come in an array of sizes and shapes. Carbide burs are more expensive than diamond, however, they last longer.
- Ceramic burs – these are designed for cutting bone for dental implant procedures to create access and pilot holes for implant placement. They’re also commonly used to remove dentin and prepare cavities; this bur material conducts less heat than others, results in fewer burns, and is better for adjusting thermoplastics and acrylic.
- Finishing burs - are used for recontouring soft tissue, removing enamel, reshaping the teeth, and finishing restoration work.
Burs may be:
- Round – used for cavity preparation and creating undercuts, access points, and channels for extraction.
- Pear-shaped – used for creating access points, preparing cavities, and splitting roots on smaller teeth.
- Cross-cut – these tapered fissure burs cut more quickly and efficiently and are used for reducing crown height on teeth and sectioning molars with multiple roots.
- Endo – endodontic use (root canal therapy)
Burs are also classified in terms of:
- Grit size
- Diameter
- Shank type
- Shank length
